Photographic collection, 1957, 2005.

The collection consists mainly of strips of negatives and black and white photographs of the Leonard Refinery. Images in clude office staff and managers, Ted Bennet, J. Walter Leonard, and Jim Wright; the main building and laboratory, both interview and exterior views; a local photograph contest; and a visit by Sohio representatives in December 1959 and January 1960. Some images are entitled "Special Effects of the Refinery, July 1957" although it is difficult to determine what the effect is. There are also 29 negatives of the Midwest Refinery in Alma. Obituaries (copies) of two refinery staff, Vance W. Orrr and George House, 2005, and a newspaper article (copy) about the negative economic effect the closure of the refinery had on Alma, 2005, complete the collection

The Leonard Refinery began operating in Alma (Mich.) in 1936. In 1938 it purchased the McClanahan refinery in St. Louis (Mich.), and moved most of its equipment to Alma. Both refineries grew and prospered. In 1950, Leonard Reinfery began reveing crude oil through the Michigan-Ohio Pipeline. In 1953 it was the first refinery in the world to offer high-octange gas: 96-octane. As a result, "Alma Day" was declared at the Oil Exposition in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 21, 1953.
